Prescott, Arizona: A Special Place

Besides its natural beauty, Prescott, Arizona has three exceptional things about it.

1. Prescott sits amid the largest stand of ponderosa pines in the world.

2. Prescott was Arizona's first territorial capital.

3. Since 1888, Prescott has been home of the world's oldest, continuously running rodeo. This rodeo is still held around the 4th of July.

Address: The Prescott Chamber of Commerce, 117 W. Goodwin Street, Prescott, Arizona 86302; 928-445-2000; 800-266-7534. Email: chamber@prescott.org. Web: http://www.prescott.org or http://www.visit-prescott.com.

Prescott is MY special place. I grew up there. It's a lot more than the stand of dying ponderosas (see any article about global warming and bark beetles) or the rodeo which is no longer located in Prescott. It's certainly more than the city council who'll sell my dream at the thought of a chance for economic stability based on unfettered growth.
Prescott's changing at the speed of light. It's more and more a metropolitan morass of strip malls and gated developments that the locals can't afford, but which remain very attractive to those who come from the West carrying their economies on their backs like turtles.
Come if you must. But don't come for the civic pride - there is none, nor for the trees - those of us who live here dare not go out during a stiff wind for fear that the wretched things will fall on us.
Come perhaps for the sense of community activism, the little coffee shop on gurley street and mccormick that overflows with impoverished but happy locals, or the little infoshop around the corner that sells not only books but a different vision of how things can be.

Please don't take what anonymous wrote as representative of the locals sentiments. I too grew up in Prescott, though I do now live on the outskirts due to rising housing prices.

You are correct, Prescott is a special place, and most people that have lived here for a time do still welcome new people. Prescott is still a small town and as far as I know no "wretched" trees have fallen on anybody:)

So continue to put out the word that Prescott is a wonderful place even though there are small vocal groups trying to change its atmosphere.

I have lived in Prescott for close to 25 years and am married to a native, whose dad was also born here.

When I travel and am asked where I am from, those asking are always enthusiastic to hear more, since they, too have heard that this is a wonderful place.

Sure we struggle with growth and colliding opinions about what's best for this community, but it is a special place.

Here are links to my blog, in which I talk often Prescott life AND another site that's all about Prescott:

I love Prescott, we come up often from the valley. The square is always fun to visit with all the events and stores. I have many favorite restaurants too! Love them all, Papa Italian is one of my favorites. One of the most enjoyable things to do when we are in Prescott. Don't miss out on any of them.

Here's one of the websites we use:
