Oldest Athletic Club in the U.S.

The New Orleans Athletic Club opened its doors on September 2, 1872. At that time, they charged 50 cents a month in dues. You can now get in for $20 (for a day pass if you're staying in a nearby hotel).

Some of the famous people who have worked out here include heavyweight boxer John L. Sullivan, actor and singer Harry Connick Jr., actor Clark Gable, playwright Tennessee Williams, actor Alec Baldwin, comedian Art Linkletter, actor Kevin Costner, basketball player John Havlicek, comedian Phil Harris, basketball player Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jimmy the Greek, singer Frankie Laine, Olympic swimmer and Tarzan actor Johnny Weismuller, comedian Bob Hope, and politicians Huey, Earl, and Russell Long.
